Fire Prevention Week

October 9-15

GROTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

As the colder weather approaches, we encourage everyone to prepare for the coming months. Have all your heating appliances and systems cleaned, serviced, and inspected. Installation and maintenance, along with proper usage are of the utmost importance. With the predictions of a hard and expensive winter this year, individuals may be tempted to use other heating alternatives. Whether the appliance is new or one that has not been used for some time, your family’s safety is our concern.

If an emergency should arise, calmly evacuate the residents and then call 911. Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you they have all the required information. Under no circumstance should you reenter the building. Remain outside and at safe distance until the Emergency Services arrives.

Other Safety tips:

When you change your clocks; change your smoke and CO detector batteries

Plan and practice family home fire drills

Stay low and crawl out of smoke

Do not attempt to put the fire out yourself, valuable time may be lost, get to safety

Use kerosene heater in well ventilated areas

Keep flammable item away from heat sources or open flame

Use caution when using candles and lamps, never leave them unattended

During power outages always run generators outside and never inside, even in an open garage.

If you have any questions or concerns; call 898-3135 or contact any department member
